Where is xml file located?

Post by prr »

I just told Explorer++ to save my settings to an xml file, and then installed the nightly over the earlier version I had.

Now, all my bookmarks have been blown away and I can't seem to find the XML file. Where is it stored?

The xml file is named "config.xml" and should be created in the same folder as the Explorer++ executable. Since there seems to be a fair number of people using the nightly build or one of the previous versions, I'll probably add something to the site indicating exactly how to back up your settings if you do plan on switching between versions.

In this case specifically, if you ran the nightly build from a different location, the xml file should still exist in the same folder as the earlier version. Alternatively, if the nightly build overwrote the config file, you should still be able to retrieve your settings from the registry.

Hope that helps!

Thanks for the reply.

Even when running E++ from the same folder as the config.xml file (I've tried it in two different folders), I still don't have my bookmarks.

How can I access them from the registry? I'm on Win7; running the 64-bit version.

The registry key is located at HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Explorer++. If you ever need to save your settings in the future, you can export that key.

When Explorer++ is run from a folder that contains config.xml , the registry is bypassed completely, and the settings are loaded from the file. Provided that you haven't run Explorer++ from anywhere else, the registry settings should still be intact.

Also, the bookmark functionality is largely incomplete in the nightly build, so if you need that, you're probably going to be better off sticking with the previous build.

I run it from a folder and there is no config.xml there. How can I save
my bookmarks and reload them if I need to? Somehow I lost them doing
a system restore.

I'm using build 1.3.4.485 win 64 bit.

I had the same problem, how to back up settings?
Just found it (and works in 32bit)

Explorer++ (window) > Menu-bar > Tools > Options
General (tab)
[x] Run in portable mode(save preferences to XML file)
- close Exp++
- the XML file is in the EXE file folder
- on my PC "C:\Programs2\Explorer++" -- my custom path
I got confused with the ...
Default new tab folder:= <my path> ... setting
- which has nothing to do with the XML file

Grayghost,

Thanks dude!

I wish he would make it a little more robust on using the bookmarks and
I'd be happy to pay for it! Love the program. Haven't found anything better.
