There should be a menu option to send file via email. This option would invoke the mail program to send the selected file.

This sounds like a security issue that's best to avoid. I avoid programs that want such access for no good reason. For me, less is better with such things. But hey, what do i know, I guess nothing is secure online anymore.

There is no security issues involved!
All I that I suggest is that instead of going to Outlook, or any mail client one uses, one would be able to select a file within the file manager and click an icon to invoke the mail client and send the file using this mail client as attachment. It just saves time, so you don't have to go to your mail client, and have this client browse your fiers, attach the file and send it.
You will do the operation anyway. This way is just easier. thats all.

Right-click the file, choose 'Send to', then 'Mail recipient'.
