Alternative to text-only URL component

Post by Teuxe »

Hi,

One of the cool features of some tools, including the explorer in more recent versions of Windows, is the decomposition of the URL (address, or path) using server/directory/file limiters, so that for example "C:\users\Bill\Documents" is split into four buttons [C:][users][Bill][Documents]. This makes backwards navigation faster.

- Clicking in this navigation bar outside the buttons (in the blank spaces) would switch this component with the classic text-only input, so that one can select some or all of the text for copy/paste.

- In this button-mode, selection of text could also be helped. Starting to click between [Bill] and [Documents], moving the mouse to between [C:] and [users] then releasing the left button, and the result would be that you selected the buttons [users][Bill] and copied the string "users\Bill" (and only that part of URL) in the clipboard automatically (with some information in the status bar like "Text '...' copied to the clipboard"). Of course the automatic copy to clipboard should be an option that could be disabled.

- Right-clicking on such a button could drop-down a list of folders at the same hierarchical level. For example, right-clicking on [Bill] could display in the popup: "Bob", "Paul", "John"... Cool stuff: the popup appears in place of the [Bill] button, displaying "Bill" in bold at the same location; "Alice" and "Alex" over "Bill"; "Carlos", "David", "Fred" under "Bill"... To be imagined, how to navigate inside long long lists, when there is more folders up/down the current location (in the same directory) than the available space on screen; maybe some kind of scrolling when reaching the top/bottom of the popup (with some special active area displaying a tiny arrow up/down).

- Really nice additional stuff: with such "brother-folder" navigation, if there exists a similar path while changing _only_ some folder in the path, then jump directly to that folder. Using the same example of "C:\Users\Bill\Documents", if using the right-button popup you change "Bill" by "Bob" and "C:\Users\Bob\Documents" exists, then directly opening this folder is magic - I can't imagine nobody ever encountered such need :-) else, by default it should open "C:\Users\Bob".

I really would like to get this feature as well.
