expl.++ prevent the usb disk unmount

Post by asbai »

When I try to unmount a usb disk, System complain that it is in using. Than I searched the opened handles in process explorer and found the explorer++ are preserving those handles even if all instances of ++ are on the unrelated positions (e.g: all ++ are viewing C:\).

The disk unmounted successfully after I closed all ++'s instances.

flash disk is locked by E++

Post by riow »

Though I do not use the flash disk after plugging in it into usb, E++ locked it that causes other disk ejector failing in releasing it. I am not sure if this is the expected behavior of E++. Anyway I thought it would be good if it won't be locked unless it's used by E++.

It is a seriously problem for me as I'm using the external storage frequently. Hope this issue could be solved ASAP. 8-)

I can only use Unlocker to remove the lock before ejecting the usb disk successfully.

+1 for fixing this on windows 7 PCs.
I have to use Lock Hunter to unlock explorer++ hold on usb drive to eject flash sticks. On other PCs where I can't install that I have to quit all explorer++ instances.
Sometimes I just pull the stick out without unmounting.
XP has a similar problem (and you can use unlocker), but I'd rather focus on finding a solution for windows 7.
Using unlocking programs can make exporer++ crash, so I'd prefer a safer solution.

I'm unmounting USB-HDD and USB-Flash by selecting the "Eject" function in Explorer++ on the mounted USB-device instead of clicking on the the Windows-unmount icon in the taskbar. A notification pops-up in the taskbar by windows that it's oke to remove the device.

That is a possible workaround, but it needs you to do additional actions to get to the Eject menu-option.
Explorer++ should not lock a (removable) drive in the first place.
Hope this will be fixed.

I get around this by launching a fresh copy of explorer++ after my usb device is enumerated.
I use that copy/instance to interact with the device.
When I am done, I close that copy of explorer++ before ejecting it.
So far, this has worked for me.

It appears that no link is established with a running copy until it interacts.
Close that copy, and the link goes away.
Not an issue for me since I normally keep several copies running anyway.

I also run classicshell, 7+taskbar tweaker & network activity notifier, so my win7 system closely resembles XP.
I recreated quick launch and set notification to always visible, which combined with explorer++ gives it back most of the behaviors M$ removed.
The other thing I do void tools everything, incredibly useful.
